Economically, rock salt is unmatched in cost-effectiveness. It’s abundant, easy to mine, and inexpensive—often just pennies per pound in bulk. Municipalities use millions of tons annually because alternatives like calcium chloride (effective to much lower temperatures) cost three times more, while magnesium chloride is gentler but pricier and less efficient in milder conditions. The low upfront price allows broad application across vast road networks, and the investment pays off quickly: de-icing operations recoup costs within minutes through reduced accident expenses, which otherwise run into billions nationwide from repairs, medical care, and lost productivity.

While rock salt has drawbacks—such as corrosion to vehicles and infrastructure, potential contamination of waterways, harm to plants, and impacts on aquatic life—these are manageable with responsible use.

Best practices include applying only what’s needed (e.g., spacing grains properly), pre-wetting salt for better adhesion, combining it with plowing, and using treated variants to minimize runoff. Many agencies now calibrate equipment precisely and prioritize mechanical snow removal first, reducing overall salt volumes while preserving safety.
